An individual looking for a career as a veterinary technician will have to attend a program in one of the veterinary technician schools. Veterinary technicians must be credentialed by the state after completing training in many of the veterinary technician schools available. They must pass a state test and become certified. Candidates will complete an associate degree at any one of the veterinary technician schools or colleges that may offer the program. Courses of study may include veterinary techniques, animal physiology, animal anatomy, animal parasitology, and other areas of study with animals.
Many technicians decide to expand their career choice and later go back to school to complete a degree as doctors of veterinary medicine. It is not uncommon that they will return as veterinarians to the practice or will decide to establish their own veterinary practice. Many will go to work in zoos as well. Before going to veterinary school, it is recommended that candidates work as veterinary technicians to get a feel for the field. This field requires close contact with a variety of animals and species, domestic and wild, and a candidate may need to be able to handle some degree of risk, as it comes with the job.
Some colleges that offer training for veterinary technicians include online schools as well. The school or college must be accredited by the AVMA – the American Veterinary Medical Association. Most positions require candidates to pass the NVT – National Veterinary Technician Test. Top accredited schools include Purdue University in Indiana, and Michigan State University. Other accredited schools include Miami Dade College, St. Petersburg College in Florida, North Dakota State University, Murray State University and Morehead State University in Kentucky, Oklahoma State University, Baker College in Michigan, Fort Valley State University in Georgia, SUNY College of Technology in New York, and many others.
Other colleges that offer veterinary technician programs include Brown Mackie College, Sanford-Brown College, Sanford-Brown Institute, Vatterot College, Ashworth College, Kaplan College, Harrison College, Minnesota School of Business, Miami-Jacobs Career College, Broadview University, Miller-Motte Technical College, U.S. Career Institute, Penn Foster Schools, Stratford Career Institute, Vancouver Career College, Modesto Junior College in California, Tomball College in Houston Texas, and other schools. It is important to check if the college is accredited by AVMA.
